Counries of no visa

With passport of certain countries, foreigner can enter into Japan without any prior procedure. They just come to Japan and show their passport to immigration. But the purpose of entry must be what they can do with Temporary Visitor status.

If your country is not listed in the website, you have to apply for visa at Japanese embassy or consulate in your country. Required documents depend on the purpose of stay.

Activities for Temporary Visitor people

They can do the following activities.

  • Sightseeing
  • Attend conference
  • Visit family or friends
  • Business trip

Business trip

Typically, an employee of foreign company comes to Japan for the business of the foreign employer company, the employee can come to Japan with Temporary Visitor  status. If they are hired, or they are directly paid by Japanese companies, they can’t come to Japan with Temporary Visitor status. It can be illegal work under immigration law. If they want to work for Japanese companies, they need to apply for appropriate work visa status before enter into Japan.

Term of stay of Temporary Visitor visa

Foreigners can stay in Japan for 90 days with this status, in principle. They can stay in Japan for almost 180 days in total within a period of one year. So it is possible to leave Japan before first expiration date, almost 90 days after entry, and come back to Japan with temporary visa again at least for once. But second time, if they stay in Japan for maximum 90 days for both of  2 times entries, third entry will be rejected at airport because of this requirement.

For passport holders of certain countries, term other than 90 days applies, or extension is possible. Basically it is not possible to extend term of stay, if it’s Temporary Visa status.
